The last year massive floods almost ruined the factory, and therefore, unlike the previous years, Prijedorcanka had no option but to invest in the recovery of the equipment, rather than in the production.

I always wondered why are there so many families who support the idea of a specific job as a family tradition. If someone’s father and grandfather worked as bakers, or carpenters, why is that person supposed to do the same work, too? It’s like as if the free will is taken away before the person was even born. But, then I thought about it from another angle. It’s true that today we all have a chance to study whatever we want, to do whatever we want, but a century ago it was not the case. Not everyone could go to school, even the primary one. So, the knowledge had to run through the family; that was probably the best option.

I guess that’s the reason why the growing of fruit was and remained one of the most wide spread jobs on the territory of Northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fact that the climactic conditions are perfect for such work, were a great plus, too. Having a lot of fruit around is quite useless, if there is not a factory to turn fruit into juices, jam or a alcoholic beverage.

And, that’s what caused the founding of Prijedorcanka a.d. back in 1972. The company was the first to have both dried plum and slivovitz.

Still, even though the company needs to get back on its feet, and to overcome many challenges, it didn’t want to turn back on the people whose lives depend on the sale of the fruit. So, this year, Prijedorcanka decided to buy 10 000 tons of fruit, of which most are strawberries. It is a lot less than any year before, but it was important decision for the benefit of the company.

It is important to notice, the price of the strawberries is very high in this area, actually, it’s a lot higher than anywhere else in the region. Of course, I’m sure that the people who work on growing strawberries, had no other option but to raise their price, since they also suffered the last year’s catastrophic flood.

I believe that it would be the best for both sides, that they create some sort of contract, supported by the government, which would help the farmers and companies to overcome the crisis, and the period of recovery.
